Psycho-Oncological Short Intervention

Psycho-oncological short intervention for parents of adolescent and young adult patients with malignant hematological diseases

Numerous recent findings consistently indicate that the parents of adolescents and young adults (AYA) with cancer have been diagnosed with a high degree of psychological distress and suffer from somatopsychic symptoms. While psycho-oncological treatment concepts have been developed and scientifically evaluated for the AYA patients, the urgently needed psycho-oncological care for the parents must be classified as insufficient overall. For the current project, a psycho-oncological short intervention (AI) consisting of five treatment hours for close relatives of AYA patients with malignant hematological diseases has been developed, which is based on the therapeutic concepts of psychoeducation and psycho-oncological-supportive psychotherapy on a psychodynamic basis. In a randomized, controlled study design, the effectiveness of this already clinically proven psycho-oncological AI in strengthening adaptive strategies of disease management will be evaluated. The primary objective of the psycho-oncological AI is based on proven methods of the working group to modify subjective theories of disease in order to develop sustainable and problem-oriented coping strategies and to achieve an improvement in the emotional regulation of negative affects in the AI participants.
